Montesquieu (1689–1755)
Montesquieu, born Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, was a French judge, political philosopher, and one of the most influential figures of the Enlightenment. He is best known for his work on political theory and the separation of powers, which he articulated in The Spirit of the Laws (1748). His ideas about dividing government authority into legislative, executive, and judicial branches influenced modern constitutional design and the development of liberal democracies. Montesquieu traveled widely, wrote extensively on law, government, and culture, and remains a central figure in the history of political philosophy.
