Avalanche is an open-source, decentralized blockchain platform developed by Ava Labs and launched in September 2020. It is designed to provide a highly scalable ecosystem for custom blockchain networks, supporting decentralized applications (dApps), digital assets, and financial primitives. Avalanche uses a unique consensus mechanism known as Avalanche consensus, which enables higher throughput, low latency, and strong safety guarantees compared to traditional Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake protocols.

The Avalanche network consists of three interoperable blockchains: the Exchange Chain (X-Chain), Contract Chain (C-Chain), and Platform Chain (P-Chain). The X-Chain is used for asset creation and transfer, the C-Chain is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing the deployment of Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, and the P-Chain manages validators and the creation of custom subnets within the Avalanche ecosystem.

Avalanche’s native token, AVAX, is used for paying transaction fees, staking by validators, and participating in network governance. The platform aims to combine high transaction speeds, cost efficiency, and customizability, attracting a wide array of decentralized finance (DeFi) projects, NFT platforms, and enterprise blockchain solutions.

Avalanche has become one of the leading blockchain platforms by total value locked (TVL) and supports a rapidly growing ecosystem of applications and services. Its development and ongoing upgrades are managed by Ava Labs, a US-based technology company, with an open-source community contributing to its growth and adoption.
